How do I know if my tree needs to be removed?

Sometimes a tree becomes damaged due to weather, disease, or insects, and cannot be saved. Other times, a tree requires removal because it’s grown too large for its present setting or is causing damage to surrounding structures.

The only way to be sure if a tree should be removed is to call a professional tree care service like ourselves. We will thoroughly evaluate the situation and make a recommendation for what is best for your tree, as well as for the safety and security of your property. At Stump and grind, we love trees and would never recommend a tree be removed that could be saved, unless you specifically wanted that tree removed. What is a Stump Grinder?

A stump grinder or stump cutter is a power tool or equipment attachment that removes tree stumps by means of a rotating cutting disk that chips away the wood. Stump grinders can be the size of a lawn mower or as large as truck. Most accomplish their task by means of a high-speed disk with teeth that grind the stump and roots into small chips. A typical stump grinder incorporates a cutter wheel with fixed carbide teeth. The cutter wheel movements are controlled by hydraulic cylinders to push the cutter wheel teeth laterally through the stump and to raise and lower the cutter wheel. This is the most efficient method of destroying the stump, leaving the area ready for the next stage of garden design whether replanting, fencing or building.

How much mess will there be? What happens to the wood/chippings that are left?

Stump and Grind use shields and boards to prevent the chippings going where they are not wanted. We reduce the stump to chippings that are mixed up with the soil in which the stump was standing. This ‘mulch’ is left in the tree stump hole for our customer to utilise. The ground can then be replanted or turfed immediately. Alternatively the mix can be used as an excellent form of weed inhibiting mulch. Stump and Grind pride ourselves in providing a service that leaves our customers completely happy with the work that has been carried out. This includes leaving the area tidy after the operation is complete.

 Will the tree re-grow?

Usually any stump that Stump and Grind remove is completely ground away and will not re-grow. There are one or two exceptions, willow for example, that may send up the odd shoot from a piece of root but even these can easily be managed with our advice.

How soon can you come to remove my stump?

Stump and Grind try to be as flexible as they can.  Work will usually be booked to be done within two weeks depending on the time of year. If you have a small stump which is not an urgent problem, we may recommend that we coordinate your work with another job in your area, which will reduce your costs.

Do I need to be at home?

Stump and Grind’s  reputation is such that customers are happy for us to carry out the work in their absence, knowing that the work will be done efficiently with the minimum amount of ground disturbance and the area being left tidy.

How much does it cost?

Costs are based upon the size and number of stumps to be removed.  When asking for a quotation it would be useful to have some idea of the number of stumps and a rough idea of how wide they are and how tall the stump is. Check the available access. This information will enable Stump and Grind to give you an accurate, ‘no obligation’ quotation on the ‘phone.
